SpringCM DocuSign
Director of User Experience
2012-2017 | Chicago, IL
SpringCM is a SaaS enterprise document management platform that was acquired by DocuSign for its capabilities in creating and managing document workflows. I joined in 2012 to lead the company’s user experience practice. In my time there, I developed a UX team that overhauled the interactive and visual design of the platform and worked with leadership on a strategy to refine and focus the product’s vision.
The Opportunity
SpringCM was seven years old when I joined and still facing the challenge of identifying go-to-market strategies for a large and eclectic feature set, workflow engine and public-facing API. The UX team played a big role in carving out new use cases and redefining our market.
The Work
Over the years, the UX team became integral to SpringCM and eventually DocuSign. We formed a research initiative called SpringCM Labs and spoke to hundreds of customers to build personas, create user journeys and validate design. We took a product that had never had a designer and overhauled everything from wireframes to visual design, creating an intuitive, persona-driven user experience. We designed for web iOS, Android, Salesforce and built a document-friendly component library that our clients began reusing in their own applications.
Here are some of my favorite projects, to give you a sense of how we approached research and design.
The Impact
SpringCM continues to extend the design system we established and expand upon use cases in contract lifecycle management.
In 2018, SpringCM was acquired by DocuSign for its advanced document functionality. Of particular value to the deal was SpringCM’s Doc Launcher product, which we reinvented and relaunched in 2017.
